This is a super (short) read for those inside the policy making and enforcing system. In my experience leaders in all sorts of institutions around the world intuitively recognise the futility of single factor solutions to complex problems, but often don’t know what else to do with the tools they have available. Finding ways to avoid “Death Star Thinking” is the first part of imagining how we might create systems that look different. Providing leaders with the skills to then reshape the rules of their institution’s “game” is another piece of the puzzle. And then using formal and informal power to help others recognise (and reward) the long, hard, slog of gardening in the world of systems work, is a third. It’s what we’ve been trying to do with police leaders in the #gpxlp. Impacting leaders at the individual level, and the global profession at the collective level. And the lessons learnt carry across to other institutional flavours.

this by Jennifer Pahlka, if you are grappling with how to secure medium-term, systems-shifting outcomes (sustainability, innovation in government+++) is wonderful. She describes (e.g.,) how public-sector recruitment has become: "...a prescribed set of procedures that are meant to appear objective but have become intricate, convoluted and at times nonsensical....only candidates with inside knowledge...can successfully navigate this highly specialized system."It's dead on, not just because it's an accurate critique, but because it captures the positive intent behind these efforts, and the reality of complex systems/wicked problems - where it's very hard to overcome the stabilizing effect of the system because there are many, non-malign, feedback loops that constrain what mechanistic interventions can accomplish.Anne White, Jason Pearman and I were talking yesterday about linking foresight-informed objectives (not this-years tomatoes, but a home-grown mix of vegetables in a garden) to the short-term (till the soil today, so that you can start to learn what grows where) - but also about why you need to push on the smaller problems to learn about how those stabilizer effects work, so that you can learn how to achieve the bigger goals. In public sector innovation, you can't wish away the systems. You have to operate them - because that's what exists - but without clarity on that objective (home-grown vegetables) you lose sight of the fact that you are experimenting and innovating (tilling, this years crop) mostly to learn - not to find the....Death Star tomato. Great stuff. Thanks Jennifer Pahlka (and always, Giulio Quaggiotto for keeping us informed!)#innovation #systemschange #publicsectorinnovation #

To all my Republican, Libertarian, or right-leaning colleagues and friends: I have a proposal for you! Come be part of a serious yet magical bi-partisan "happening" at the end of June in Kenosha, WI. Braver Angels, the org I work for as CTO, is the nation's largest grassroots alliance of political Reds, Blues, and "Others" working across our political differences to reduce the toxicity of US politics, learning how to disagree better so that we can achieve more common ground and common sense solutions at both the local and national level. The convention is like a big tent revival for American Hope, and a place for healing, renewed optimism, and concrete hooks into skills and a community of fellow patriots of all political viewpoints looking to restore America's promise as a place where political disagreement is a healthy part of our self-governance, and not a source of hostility that tears communities apart. I'm calling on Reds and Libertarians specifically because we need more of you in the mix. This event guarantees an equal number of attendee seats are for Red and Blue sides of the aisle, and Reds are currently the limiting factor. Check it out here:

If you've got 20 minutes to invest in learning what attracts outstanding men to the women they choose to love and commit to in a faithful relationship, do yourself a favor by listening to this video. In addition to having a generous and loving nature, as described in Rosalynn Carter's eulogy, she was, by all accounts, a virtuous woman. The phrase "virtuous woman" is in the Bible, but I had not heard it in eons. I would love to hear it discussed multiple times in ordinary conversation and explained to those who are younger or may never have heard of it.Because the way many women live now does not fit that phrase. And our communities are crumbling largely because of it. Women are innately powerful and form the foundation of our neighborhoods. They also empower the men who achieve greatness because of their support. But that occurs only when women honor themselves by their actions. Please understand that I am no saint, but I try to live an exemplary life. I can't stand in judgment of anyone but myself. But if you examine the characteristics of the virtuous woman described in the Word, you will see the behaviors that good men admire and find attractive. You will also understand what it takes to weave strong marriages and families together in a rich, intimate, and joyful tapestry of family life—even during the tough times. This minister's eulogy explains it beautifully. I want to clarify, just like Pastor Lowden did, that this is no political plug. It isn't about elections and party divisions. This is true wisdom about how a woman's pivotal role in marriages and communities that are centered around God works for all.Stay Healthy, Happy, and Satisfied#GatherattheHearthTeriseI help black women seeking more joy, health, energy, fulfilling relationships, and personal power bust through limiting beliefs, self-doubt, and a lack of confidence.
