11 am Wednesday ebruary 27 2008 at Labby Memorial uneral Home in Leesville with Rev Bobby Shirley offi ciating Burial will follow in the Self Cemetery in Leesville under the direction of Labby Memorial uneral Home of Leesville Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 9 pm Tuesday eb 26 and from 8 am until time of service Wednesday eb 27 at Labby Memorial uneral Home She passed away on eb 24 at Woodlands Care Center in Leesville Mrs McRae was born April 24 1908 in Pickering She was the daughter of the late Mitchell Neal Oakes and Ida Jeane Oakes She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Hornbeck Miss Lena as she was affectionately known was a life long resident of Vernon Parish She loved garden ing and always worked hard to have a year round productive vegetable garden and to have her yard fdled with beautiful flowers and shrubs Sharing her vegetables and flowers with her family friends and neighbors provided her great enjoy ment and happiness during her entire life She was preceded in death by her husband rank McRae son Warren McRae: brothers Guy Oakes Harless Oakes and Neal Oakes and sister Gladys Oakes Kretchman Survivors include her sons Milton McRae and wife Alice of Shreveport and Ted McRae and wife Errol of Baton Rouge daughter Glenda McRae Coburn and husband Venton of Leesville daughter in law Gwendolyn McRae of Shreveport ten grandchildren William McRae of Charlottesville Va Jana McRae of Shreveport Lisa McRae ulp of Oakton Va Timothy McRae of Minden Derek McRae of High Point NC Debra McRae Danielson Patricia McRae and Molly McRae all of Baton Rouge and Yvette Coburn and Colette Coburn both of Dallas In addition she leaves 13 great grandchildren three great great grandchil dren a large extended family and many frienda Pallbearers will be rank Monday eb 25 in the funeral home She passed away eb 23 HUI in her residence in Anacoco after a nine month courageous battle with colon cancer Wanda was born in Hornbeck and was a 1969 graduate of Hornbeck High School She owned and operated Sunseekers Tanning Salon in Anacoco since 1992 Wanda was a beauti ful and loving wife mother sister and grandmother She always loved to travel to the mountains and the beaches Survivors include her husband of 23 years Barney Delp of Anacoco her children and grandchildren Sharon Austin and husband JR and Joshua and Seth Ponthieux of Anacoco Susan routine check for bone thinning osteoporosis There's news for women too: A new computerized tool uses more than bone density tests to predict who is at high est risk of breaking a bone in coming years by adding in such important risk factors as whether a parent ever broke a hip an effort to better target who really needs treatment and who can safely skip it even before bones become thin enough to be offi cially labeled an osteoporosis patient And it promises a major shift in bone care treat the people who have high risk and you would reassure the women at low risk and ask them to come back for a re check in a few years" explains Dr Ethel Siris of Columbia University and president of the National Osteoporosis oundation which issued the new guide lines last week Moreover the new work stresses that a disease long associated with little old white ladies actually can strike anyone as they age The biggest change: The NO guidelines recommend a bone mineral density ray test for all men 70 and older just like women 65 and older have long been urged to get (Men and women may need the tests sooner if other factors put them at high risk) a recognition more so now than in the past that men are at says Dr Jay Magaziner of the University of Maryland medical school who has long researched hip fractures most feared break misunderstand Postmenopausal women are still at greatest risk of osteo porosis when bone strength ening estrogen plummets But a quarter of hip fractures occur in men and as men live longer the number who break a hip is steadily rising Magaziner told a recent meet ing of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Screening men we do with women can have some real payoffs in terms of pre vention" he says Another conundrum: More than half of fractures due to bone loss occur in people whose bones are thinning but aren't quite thin enough to be labeled osteoporosis They're in a gray zone known as osteopenia In the US alone some 10 million people have osteoporo sis but 34 million are estimat ed to have osteopenia With the population rapidly aging the government estimates half of Americans over 50 will be at risk of fractures from too thin bones by 2020 The World Health Organization funded a Web based tool called RAX unveiled last week that helps calculate the odds of a hip wrist shoulder or spine frac ture within the next 10 years for anyone 40 or older in
