Juventus are challenging a decision by an arbitration board ordering the club to pay Cristiano Ronaldo approximately €9.8 million ($10.35m, £8.3m) in back wages.

Last month a hearing was held into the compensation reduction agreement between Juventus and Ronaldo during the COVID-affected 2020-21 season.

Documentation from the hearing showed Ronaldo agreed to defer a portion of his Juventus wages to ease the club’s financial pressures during the pandemic. He claimed he was subsequently not reimbursed the full amount.

Burnley goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar is set to leave the club to join Ajax.

A deal for ten Rouwelaar to depart was in place before Vincent Kompany's expected move to Bayern Munich gathered pace.

The 43-year-old arrived as part of Kompany's coaching staff when the Belgian took the job at Burnley in 2022.

The goalkeeper coach wanted to take the opportunity to return to his home country and will form part of Ajax's coaching staff under the newly-appointed Francesco Farioli.

Moshiri 'approached by prospective Everton buyers'

Getty Images

Farhad Moshiri has told the Everton fan advisory board that he has received “unsolicited approaches from other parties” interested in buying the club, with 777 Partners’ takeover agreement due to expire at the end of the month.

Moshiri, the club’s majority shareholder, met the group on Monday after they wrote to him expressing concerns over what has become a protracted and increasingly controversial takeover bid.

777 agreed a deal to purchase the Anglo-Iranian’s 94 per cent shareholding in Everton last September but are yet to meet all the conditions outlined by the Premier League to complete their purchase.

The 38-year-old's previous deal was set to expire this summer but he will now remain at the club until June 2025.

The veteran goalkeeper initially joined City on loan in 2019 before making the move permanent in 2021.

“I’m looking forward to another season as part of this incredible squad at City,” said Carson.

“Every day I work hard and learn something new from Pep, Xabi Mancisidor and the world class group of players.

“Hopefully I can continue to help our goalkeepers perform at their best as we challenge for even more trophies.”

Ten Hag backs Rashford to use England omission as motivation

Premier League news live (45)

Erik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford can use being left out of the England squad for this summer’s European Championship as motivation ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup final on Saturday.

Rashford failed to make the cut in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad after a disappointing season at Old Trafford that saw him score seven goals.

But Ten Hag has backed the 26-year-old to get over the disappointment and wants him to use it to his side’s advantage against Manchester City at Wembley.

Paqueta charged by FA for alleged breaches of betting rules

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) in relation to alleged betting breaches.

The FA had opened an investigation into Paqueta last August. He has now been charged with four alleged breaches of FA Rule E5.1 in relation to his conduct in West Ham’s Premier League fixtures against Leicester City on November 12, 2022, Aston Villa on March 12, 2023, Leeds United on May 21, 2023, and Bournemouth on August 12, 2023.

In a statement, the FA said that Paqueta reportedly “sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in these matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting”.

Independent football regulator delayed by UK general election

Premier League news live (59)

Adam Davy/PA Images via Getty Images

British prime minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to call a general election on July 4 has pushed back the arrival of an independent football regulator until next year at the earliest.

It had been hoped that the much-discussed Football Governance Bill would be included in what is known as the “wash-up”, the period at the end of a parliament when bills that have not gone through every step of the legislative process can be waved through, but it has not progressed far enough.

This will come as a huge frustration to the English Football League, in particular, as it has lobbied hard for the bill’s passage into law in the hope it will force the Premier League to offer the EFL’s 72 clubs a more generous financial solidarity package.

The Premier League has been considerably less enthusiastic in its support for an independent regulator, which is the bill’s centrepiece, but it will not be celebrating too loudly as Labour, which has a huge lead in the polls, has made it clear it will re-introduce the bill at the earliest opportunity.

Chelsea to confirm Bompastor as new head coach

Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images

Chelsea Women are set to confirm Sonia Bompastor as their new head coach next week.

Bompastor — who has won the Champions League as a player and manager — will replace Emma Hayes, who has left the club after 12 years in charge to take over the USWNT.

Bompastor could win a second European title with her Lyon side taking on Barcelona in the final in Bilbao on Saturday.

It has been agreed any official announcement of her appointment with the Women's Super League (WSL) club won't come before the showpiece game.

Bompastor will also bring her long-term assistant, Camille Abily, with her.

There will be further appointments after it was confirmed Denise Reddy, Stuart Searle, Bart Caubergh, Ferdia O'Hanrahan and Cameron Meighan would all be following Hayes to the U.S.

Farioli close to becoming Ajax head coach

Ajax are close to agreeing a deal that will see Francesco Farioli become their new head coach.

A contract has not yet been agreed, but the move is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Should his move be confirmed, Farioli will become the first non-Dutch coach at Ajax since Danish manager Morten Olsen left in 1998.

Farioli's contract at his current club, Nice, was due to run until the summer of 2025. He had only joined at the beginning of the 2023-24 season, leading Nice to a 13-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 at the start of the campaign. Their form, however, tailed off in the new year and they finished fifth in the table.

Ajax had been looking for a new boss after sacking Maurice Steijn in October and appointing John van’t Schip on an interim basis.

They finished fifth in the Eredivisie this season, their lowest position in 24 years, 35 points behind winners PSV.

Bellamy won't join Kompany at Bayern

Craig Bellamy will not be joining Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich should the German club’s negotiations with Kompany proceed as expected.

Bellamy remains assistant at Burnley and is likely to be a contender for the vacancy at Turf Moor once Kompany’s move to Bayern is confirmed.

Bellamy, 44, has worked alongside Kompany previously at Anderlecht, the two men having played together at Manchester City and formed a close relationship.

When Kompany took over at Burnley in the summer of 2022 Bellamy went with him to Lancashire as assistant manager and was part of the club’s Championship-winning set-up.

It was thought Bellamy would follow Kompany to Germany once news of Bayern’s interest became public but the Welshman’s preference is stay in the UK and continue his coaching there.

Freedman to stay at Palace after signing new contract

Premier League news live (85)

Justin Setterfield/Getty Images

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has committed his future to the south London club by signing a new contract.

The 49-year-old Scot emerged as a leading candidate for Newcastle United, who are working to replace Dan Ashworth amid his impending switch to a similar role at Manchester United.

It led to uncertainty over a key member of the Palace hierarchy, but Freedman has moved to end any speculation — putting pen to paper on fresh terms that prolong his stay at Selhurst Park.

The news will come as a major boost to Palace after an excellent finish to the season under new manager Oliver Glasner, the Austrian coach Freedman was central to securing in February.

They also have a crucial summer ahead, with Freedman in charge of recruitment and serious interest expected for prominent squad members like Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Michael Olise.

What West Ham can expect from Lopetegui

Premier League news live (90)

Charlie Crowhurst/Getty Images

Style is a big question when it comes to the identity of the man who will become just the 18th to take permanent charge of West Ham United. The last guy led the club to their first trophy in more than four decades and delivered two impressive top-seven finishes.

Even as David Moyes achieved those things, there were grumbles about the style of football; grumbles that reached a cacophony in recent months.

What West Ham appear to need now is a manager with an attacking, exciting brand of play and the acumen to lift them towards being a regular top-six club that can challenge for cup honours.

Does Julen Lopetegui fit that bill? Allow Tim Spiers, Dermot Corrigan and more to explain

‘An underwhelming appointment’

Premier League news live (97)

Marc Atkins/Getty Images

Lopetegui will have his work cut out to impress West Ham fans ahead of the new season. Following failed talks with Amorim, Lopetegui is considered an underwhelming replacement for Moyes.

The former Wolves boss is not known for promoting youngsters into the first team, or playing a stylish brand of football. Moyes struggled to please supporters in both areas, which were contributing factors behind his departure.

But, similar to Moyes, Lopetegui knows how to win a European trophy having won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020. He also secured three successive top-four finishes during his time there.

Lopetegui, though, is yet to replicate his successful spell at Sevilla. He walked out of Wolves last summer following rows over transfers and there are question marks over his 138 days as manager of Real Madrid. He will hope to restore his reputation at the London Stadium.

Lopetegui confirmed as West Ham’s new head coach

Premier League news live (104)

West Ham United have confirmed Julen Lopetegui as the club’s new head coach.

West Ham announced earlier this month that David Moyes would leave the club when his current contract expires.

The Athletic reported on May 6 that West Ham had agreed terms with Lopetegui to take over and the Spaniard will begin work on July 1.

Lopetegui said: “I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big club. We will try to put our stamp on the club.

“I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this.

“I am where I want to be. I am here because I want to be here and for us it was a fantastic day when we closed our agreement here because our commitment is 100 per cent to be here. We had other opportunities but I am very happy that West Ham chose me because I chose West Ham too, so we are really happy about this.”

Chelsea hoping to appoint Pochettino's replacement in coming days

Premier League news live (124)

Chelsea have identified a shortlist of candidates to become their next head coach and hope to make an appointment in a matter of days.

Owners Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly are looking for their third permanent manager in two years after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino by mutual consent on Tuesday evening.

The search for Pochettino’s replacement will be entrusted to co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley — the duo that led the review into the Argentine coach’s 2023/24 performance.

The plan is to appoint an emerging, progressive young head coach who can grow with this group of players and develop a style of play over multiple years.

Postecoglou confirmed as Euro 2024 pundit for ITV

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will appear as a pundit on ITV this summer as part of their coverage of this summer’s European Championship.

Postecoglou, who is currently in his home country of Australia with Spurs on their trip to play a friendly against Newcastle in Melbourne, has won plaudits during his debut season in the Premier League for his forthright opinions, sense of humour and exciting brand of football.

The move is especially interesting as it comes just a week after his public outburst following Tottenham’s home defeat to Manchester City — which dented Arsenal’s title hopes — where he said the foundations of what he was trying to build had been revealed to be “fairly fragile”.
